The Mermaid Archetype: Power, Femininity, and Inner Magic

Writer's picture: maria delgadomaria delgado

I’ve always felt that the mermaid archetype is at the heart of everything I do. For me, it’s not just about putting on a shiny tail and swimming in the water; it’s about connecting with that powerful, feminine, and free version of ourselves that we sometimes forget exists.

Here’s a little secret: as a child, Disney’s The Little Mermaid wasn’t exactly my favorite. I always thought: give up my voice for a man? That didn’t seem fair! (Luckily, the modern version has a much more inspiring twist). However, my fascination with mermaids always came from somewhere else: mythology and legends.

These mystical creatures have always drawn me in for what they represent: power, sensuality, and mystery. A being as beautiful as it is dangerous—a kind of goddess capable of anything.

Femininity: The Source of Our Power

Think about this: how many times have we felt small or fragile, hiding behind a "superwoman" persona that can handle everything but is more connected to masculine energy? Culturally, we were taught that being feminine was synonymous with weakness, and many of us grew up believing that. But here’s the truth: feminine energy isn’t just powerful—it’s unstoppable.

The mermaid reminds us of this. She’s strong, yes, but she doesn’t need to lose her femininity to be so. She’s sensual, intuitive, nurturing, free, and self-assured. She doesn’t shy away from showing her beauty or her mystery because she knows that’s where her power lies.

Reconnecting with the Goddess and Inner Child

What I love most about this archetype is how it helps us rediscover parts of ourselves we often ignore:

  • Our inner child, playful and free, reminding us to enjoy and trust life.

  • The sensual goddess, who knows her worth, her power, and doesn’t need to hide who she is to shine.

The experience of becoming a mermaid is much more than swimming: it’s a journey back to ourselves, a celebration of femininity, and a discovery that, far from being a weakness, it’s our greatest strength.

And You?

If you’ve ever felt small or believed that being strong means abandoning your femininity, I invite you to connect with your inner mermaid. Because yes, we all carry a goddess within us who can surprise us.

The question is: are you ready to listen to her? Does this idea of the mermaid archetype resonate with you? Share your thoughts in the comments—I’d love to hear them!
